Abstarct

Presented is comprehensive analysis of data resulted from monitoring the status of thyroid system in children, adolescents and pregnant women living on the south-western areas of Kaluga region. The analysis was made for 8.5 thousand people under clinical observation whose age at the time of the Chernobyl accident was from several weeks to 18 years and those women who were pregnant during the clinical examinations. A detailed consideration is given to sex-age structure and possible causes of pathologic changes in thyroid of children and adolescents as well as the status of adaptation - compensation mechanisms in pregnant women. The presented materials give a wider radiation - epidemiological picture of small dose effects and, in practical terms enable public health services to make effective correction in the prophylactic medical examination scheme.
