Abstract

40 years ago, as part of the implementation of a set of measures to minimize the medical radiological consequences of the Chernobyl accident, the USSR Government decided to create the "All-Union dis-tributed registry of persons exposed to radiation as a result of the Chernobyl accident" (AUDR) on the basis of the computer center of the Scientific Research Institute of Medical Radiology of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences in Obninsk. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the AUDR was trans-formed first into the Russian National Medical Dosimetric Registry (RNMDR), and then into the National Radiation and Epidemiological Registry (NRER), the state information system for personal data of Rus-sian citizens exposed to radiation as a result of radiation accidents and other emergencies incidents. The federal level of the NRER receives information from the regional segments of the registry, operating in all regions of the Russian Federation, and from 4 departmental sub-registries. Currently, information on 834,267 individuals has been entered into the NRER, of which 763,213 belong to the so-called "Chernobyl contingent." The article provides information on the development of the regulatory frame-work, organizational structure and technology of the NRER, as well as a brief description of the territorial distribution of the contingent registered in the Unified Database of the NRER. The final part of the article presents the main research results on the assessment of the radiological consequences of the Cherno-byl accident, based on the analysis of data accumulated in the NRER since 1986.

Key words
Chernobyl accident, radiation exposure, categories of exposed citizens, state information system, health monitoring, medical and dosimetric information, data verification and control, radiation epidemiology, radiation risk, forecast of radiological consequences.
