Abstract

One of the main tasks that the Russian State Medical and Dosimetric Register should solve is the assessment of the possible negative, radiation-induced effects of exposure to a large number of people. This section describes the methodology and some of the results of the assessment of individualized radiation loads on persons listed in the RNMDR and living in the contaminated areas of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Russia. All major factors of the radiation impact of the Chernobyl accidents on the population living in contaminated areas, and the possibility of obtaining estimates of individual radiation doses. For this contingent, the most significant radiation exposure is internal exposure of the thyroid gland by incorporated iodine radionuclides. At the same time, the maximum absorbed dose in the thyroid gland for residents of Russia reached values of about 10 Gy. Therefore, the published section focuses on the presentation of problems and some of their solutions related to the reconstruction of radiation loads on the thyroid gland.

Key words
Evaluation of radiation-induced effects of radiation, individualized radiation loads, the accident at the Chernoyl nuclear power plant, radiation exposure, absorbed dose, thyroid gland, radiation load reconstruction.
